La Otracina - The Risk of Gravitation

Holy Mountain, 2008, Psychedelic Everything

Easily one of the best things I have heard this year. Old school heavy rocking with a strong modern psyche influence, a penchant for extremely technical progressive playing, some hints of krautrock and a tinge of free jazz thrash a la last exit make for one combustible combination. It is not simply a revival or a self-conscious attempt at showing how eclectic their tastes are either. This band has developed their own sound with their extensive knowledge of the past and their forward looking attitude to the sounds of jah future. They are beginning to blend their more free form style from previous outings with heavy psychedelic shredding. It should be interested to see where they go from here.

INFORMATION:

"la otracina began in a murky brooklyn basement in 2003, inspired by a love of all things heavy and psychedelic! founded by drummer adam kriney and guitarist joshua anzano (now of titan/tee pee records), they forged a musical universe of epic progressive rock and psychotic free-form improvisations! along their 5 year trip, la otracina released handfuls of limited edition recordings on kriney's own colour sounds recordings label building a solid fanbase in the underground psych/experimental scene and in 2007 thier debut full length cd "tonal ellipse of the one" was released on the holy mountain record label.

as a live entity, they've played extensively in their hometown of brooklyn, ny, toured the usa 4 times and have toured italy as well performing
alongside groups that span the worlds of psych/metal/prog/improv/noise and beyond, including: boris, zoroaster, wooden shjips, the warlocks, sunburned hand of the man, these are powers, mouthus, plastic crimewave sound, axolotl, assemble head in sunburst sound,
cloudland canyon, upsilon acrux, charalambides, ghq, the phantom family halo, warmer milks & more...

the current line-up consists of kriney on drums and vocals, multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer evan sobel on fender bass vi, and philippe
ortanez on electric guitar.

they are a majestic contemporary vision of progressive-psychedelic hard-rock, seamlessly combining the awesome grace of king crimson and the heavy stoned bliss of black sabbath with the cosmic textures of hawkwind and the undeniable might of early metallica...not to mention some lessons learned from terry riley and albert ayler along the way.

they are the crystal wizards of the cosmic weird! they are la otracina! "

i'm loving this, thanks for posting it. i admit i was a bit skeptical when i read your Last Exit reference, but, having spun this a handful of times now i'd say it's well-warranted. no small feat! very enjoyable album. i assume "adam" is a band member? if so, excellent work. i'll be purchasing a copy ASAP :)
